Water Weight, Explained
That overnight jump on the scale? Almost always water. Here's what water weight is and why it's nothing to worry about.
What water weight is
Your body is mostly water, and how much it holds shifts constantly. Those shifts show up on the scale as fast changes that have nothing to do with fat.
What makes you hold water
- Salt: a salty meal can add water weight overnight.
- Carbs: each gram of stored carbohydrate holds extra water.
- Hormones: monthly cycles drive predictable swings.
- Heat, stress and hard workouts: all cause temporary retention.
Why it's harmless
Water weight comes and goes on its own. It can mask fat loss for days, which is exactly why the trend matters more than any single reading.
What to do about it
Nothing dramatic. Stay consistent, keep logging, and let the trend see through the water.
