How Long Does Water Weight Last?

Guide · 3 min read

The scale jumped overnight and you want to know one thing: when does it go back down? Here's how long each kind of water weight sticks around.

Quick answer: Most water weight clears within 1–3 days once its cause passes. Salt and carb-heavy meals resolve fastest; hormonal retention follows your cycle; new-exercise retention can take about a week.

Salty meal: 1–2 days

A high-sodium dinner pulls extra water into your bloodstream, and the scale shows it the next morning. Drink normally and it clears within a day or two as your kidneys rebalance.

Carb refeed: 1–3 days

After a low-carb stretch, a pasta night refills glycogen stores — and each gram of glycogen holds about 3 grams of water. That can mean 1–2 kg overnight, gone again within a few days of normal eating.

Hormonal retention: up to a week

Cycle-related water retention typically builds in the days before a period and releases within a few days after it starts. It's the most predictable fluctuation there is — and the most worth ignoring.

New exercise: about a week

Muscle-repair inflammation from an unfamiliar workout holds fluid for several days. It fades as your body adapts to the routine.

The common thread

Every kind of water weight resolves on its own — no detox required. Keep weighing, keep logging, and let the trend line look through it.

Common questions

How do I get rid of water weight fast?
You mostly don't need to — it clears on its own in 1–3 days. Drinking normal amounts of water, moving, and returning to your usual sodium intake speeds the rebalance.
Can water weight last a week?
Yes. Hormonal retention and new-exercise inflammation can each hold for around a week. If your trend is flat for more than two to three weeks, that's no longer water.
How much water weight can I be holding?
Commonly 0.5–2 kg (1–4 lb), and more after big salt plus carb meals. That's why a single day's scale change says almost nothing about fat.
