Does Muscle Weigh More Than Fat?
It's the classic gym question, and the pedantic answer is no — a kilo is a kilo. The useful answer is about density, and it explains one of the most confusing things the scale does.
Same weight, different volume
Muscle tissue is denser than fat — roughly 1.06 g/ml versus about 0.9 g/ml. Two people can weigh exactly the same and wear very different sizes, because the leaner one's kilos take up less room.
Why this confuses the scale
Start strength training and you may gain muscle while losing fat. The scale nets those against each other and barely moves — even though your body is genuinely changing. People quit at exactly this point, thinking nothing is happening.
