How to Guess a Puppy's Breed (and Adult Size)

Puppies are adorable mystery boxes. You can't be certain what a young pup will become, but the clues are there if you know where to look.

Even puppies show breed hints — ear shape, muzzle, coat texture and body proportions. They're not proof, but they narrow it down.

Guessing adult size

• Big paws often hint at a bigger adult.
• Parents' size, if known, is the best predictor.
• Current age and weight give a rough trajectory.
• Breed matches suggest a typical adult range.

Use a photo identifier

Scan your puppy for the closest breed matches, then look up those breeds' typical adult size. Re-scan every few weeks as features develop.

When you'll know for sure

Appearance becomes clearer as the pup matures; a DNA test gives certainty at any age.
