How to Tell What's in Your Mixed-Breed Dog

Guide · 3 min read

Adopted a one-of-a-kind mutt? Working out what's in the mix is half the fun. Here's what actually helps — and what to take with a pinch of salt.

Looks give you clues, not proof

Physical traits — size, coat, ears, tail, muzzle — hint at the breeds involved, but mixes combine them unpredictably. A confident guess is still a guess.

Photo identifiers: fast and free

An app reads your dog's features and shows the breeds it most resembles in seconds. Great for a quick, no-cost starting point, especially for obvious breed traits.

DNA tests: the gold standard

A cheek-swab DNA test is the most accurate way to know a mix's makeup, but it costs money and takes a couple of weeks. Use it when you want certainty.

A sensible approach
