Common Dog Breeds and How to Spot Them
A handful of breeds show up again and again — at the park, in shelters, and in the mix of countless mutts. Here's how to spot the most common ones.
Labrador & Golden Retriever
Medium-large, friendly, with a broad head and otter-like tail (Lab) or a longer golden coat (Golden). Two of the most common purebreds and mix ingredients.
German Shepherd
Large, with upright ears, a sloping back and a tan-and-black saddle coat. Alert and athletic — a frequent working and family dog.
French Bulldog & other flat-faces
Small and compact, with bat ears and a short muzzle. Booming in popularity, and easy to recognise.
Dachshund, Chihuahua and small mixes
- Dachshund: long body, short legs.
- Chihuahua: tiny, big ears, apple head.
- Terrier types: wiry coats, keen expressions.
- Many small dogs are mixes of these.
Spotting them in a mix
In a mixed dog, look for one or two dominant traits — the Shepherd's ears, the Lab's build. A photo identifier can confirm your hunch in seconds.
