How Accurate Are Cat Breed Identifiers?

Guide · 3 min read

Can an app really tell your cat's breed from a photo? Mostly yes — with honest limits. Here's what accuracy actually looks like.

Purebreds: high accuracy

For a clearly purebred cat — a Siamese, a Maine Coon, a Bengal — a good identifier is very reliable, because the breed's features are distinctive and consistent.

Moggies: best guess, not certainty

Most cats are mixed-breed, and no photo tool can untangle a moggy perfectly. A good app shows the closest matches and a confidence score rather than forcing a single answer.

What affects the result

Getting the best result

Use a good photo, try a second angle, and read the confidence score. When two scans agree, you can trust it; when they diverge, you've learned the cat is probably a mix.
