Can You Identify a Cat's Breed Just by Looking?
We all play 'guess the breed' when we see a cat. But how reliable is the eyeball test, really? The answer: helpful, but easy to get wrong.
Looks are a starting point
Some breeds are unmistakable by sight — the flat face of a Persian, the large tufted ears of a Maine Coon, the spotted coat of a Bengal. But appearance can mislead, and moggies scramble all the signals.
Traits that help most
- Head and face shape (round vs. wedge-shaped).
- Ear size and set.
- Body build (cobby vs. long and lean).
- Coat length, texture and pattern.
Where the eye fails
Coat colour is notoriously misleading — tabby patterns appear across dozens of breeds and moggies alike. A confident visual guess for a mixed cat is frequently wrong.
A better answer
Use a photo identifier to turn your guess into the closest matches with a confidence score — instant, free, and more consistent than the human eye.
