What Is a Reverse Holo Card in Pokemon?
You pull a shiny card from a pack and it looks like a holo, but the artwork is flat while the card border and body shimmer. That is a reverse holo, and it is one of the most common sources of confusion for newer collectors.
The difference from a regular holo
A standard holo rare has a flat card body with a holographic, foil-printed artwork. A reverse holo is the opposite: the artwork is flat or lightly textured, while the card frame, text box and surrounding area are covered in holographic foil. Some sets use sparkly, mosaic or star-pattern foil across the reverse holo background.
How they are distributed
In most modern Pokemon sets, every booster pack contains one reverse holo slot. That slot can produce a reverse holo version of any card in the set: commons, uncommons, rares and even some rarer cards. A standard pack therefore contains at least one reverse holo from the common or uncommon pool.
Are reverse holos worth more?
- Common and uncommon reverse holos: worth slightly more than the non-holo version, typically a few cents to a dollar depending on the card.
- Rare reverse holos: the base rare card is usually worth more, but a reverse holo version of a popular rare can trade near the holo price.
- Special sets and textures: some sets use distinctive foil patterns that make the reverse holos particularly sought after.
Which reverse holos to keep
Reverse holos of popular Pokemon in sets with distinctive foil patterns, near-mint condition copies of any high-play competitive card, and reverse holos of cards that appear in only one set are the ones worth tracking closely.
Checking the condition
Reverse holo foil shows scratches and scuffs more visibly than regular card surfaces. Light scratching of the foil area is common and lowers grade significantly. Use Card Scanner to scan the card and check its current market price. For how condition affects value, see card condition grading explained.
Common questions
- What is a reverse holo Pokemon card?
- A card where the holographic foil covers the card body, text areas and border, while the artwork window remains flat. Most modern Pokemon sets include a reverse holo version of every card, distributed in the reverse holo slot of booster packs.
- Are reverse holo cards worth money?
- Common and uncommon reverse holos are worth slightly more than non-holos. Reverse holos of popular or rare cards can be valuable, especially in near-mint condition or from sets with distinctive foil patterns. Most are worth a modest premium over the standard print.
- How do I tell a reverse holo from a regular holo?
- On a regular holo, the artwork shimmers. On a reverse holo, the artwork is flat and the surrounding card body and border shimmer. Tilt the card under a light to see which surface catches the light.
